The new Parliamentary building in Edinburgh, located right across from Holyrood House Palace, is highly controversial. One glance will tell you why. Furthermore, it has cost far more to construct than was originally predicted. I'm not ready to take a stance on its exterior, which is hard to assimilate with traditional aesthetic standards. But I will say that inside it has a kind of modern elegance. And when you find that you can walk freely into the gallery of the main chamber and watch the prime minister meeting with school children just a few feet below, a democratic grace is spread over the whole structure. Pictures can't adequately convey the feeling of it. But here are a few that might help you get a start.
